Design for Healthcare (D4H)

Scope:

We are experiencing an era of profound transformation when mobile ubiquitous connection makes possible a real innovation of healthcare and wellbeing services. The market availability of devices that are deeply integrated in everyday objects like watches and garments also enhance the possibility to have a continuous monitoring of parameters and functions. We operate in this infinitely mutable and extraordinarily fast scenario, with the aim to design innovations and new perspectives without forgetting the human dimension which is the key and driving factor. For many years, technology has been the hub of innovation and development, forgetting that systems and devices are developed for humans, who should be the center of the entire process indeed. Starting from the human dimension, taking a cue from disciplines such as ergonomics and design, can help researchers to develop and implement real tools fitting into everyday objects and life. To do that we need to use a specific approach during the design process; design thinking and Human-centered design (HCD) can be a good starting point for develops solutions to problems by involving the human perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process. This creative method has the aim to make systems usable and useful, focusing on the users, designing around their needs and requirements at all stages, and by applying human factors/ergonomics, usability knowledge, and techniques. This approach enhances effectiveness and efficiency, improves human well-being, user satisfaction, accessibility and sustainability; and counteracts possible adverse effects of use on human health, safety and performance. With this workshop we would discuss on the relationship between design process, human factors and technology development, trying to investigate how the implementation of human perspective can play a key role in the scenario of healthcare technologies.

Paper submission:

Papers should be submitted through EAI ‘Confy’ system at Confy, and have to comply with the Springer format (see Author’s kit section).

Publication:

All accepted papers will be published together with the proceedings of MobiHealth 2017 by Springer and made available through SpringerLink Digital Library, one of the world’s largest scientific libraries.

Proceedings are submitted for inclusion to the leading indexing services: DBLP, Google Scholar, Thomson Scientific ISI Proceedings, EI Elsevier Engineering Index, CrossRef, Scopus, as well as EAI’s own EU Digital Library (EUDL).

Accepted Authors will be invited to submit an extended version of their work to Special Issue in the:

Short Biography of organizers:

eng. Paolo Perego, Ph.D.

Paolo Perego is a biomedical engineer specialized in wearable technologies and in particular: electronic, software and algorithms development. he obtains the Ph.D. in Design in 2014 at Politecnico di Milano with a research focused on wearable biomedical system for cardio/respiratory monitoring for fragile people (newborn and elderly). The research focused on finding new methodology to approach monitoring and diagnosis with very sensitive and fragile users. He is graduated in Biomedical Engineer in 2008 at the same university with a thesis on Brain Computer Interfaces, and particularly a  graphics interface framework for simplifying the creation and use of BCI system at home. From 2008 he works as Researcher in the Design Department  of Politecnico di Milano on the field of BCI and wearable devices with special attention to new technology in the field of design, textile technology and digital manufacturing, hardware and software. He is involved in Research Project funded  by both EU Commision and local boards.

Roberto Sironi

Roberto Sironi is an Italian designer who graduated in Industrial design at Polytechnic of Milan.
In 2014 he joined the Design Department at Polytechnic of Milan, where he has involved in several research projects, focused on wearable technologies. In 2015 he received the Honorable mention at the ADI Compasso d’OroInternational Award and his works have been exhibited in different countries within the itinerant exhibition of Triennale Design Museum

Carlo Emilio Standoli, Ph.D.

Carlo Emilio Standoli is a Research Fellow at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano. He received his Master Degree in Industrial Design and his Ph.D. in Design from Politecnico di Milano. He works with the TeDH (Technology and Design in Healthcare) Research Group, and he is involved in basic and applied research in the Healthcare field, in the Wearable Monitoring Systems field and in the Human Factor and Human-Product Interaction field. He is involved in Research Projects funded by the European Commission and other National and Local boards.
